Is Omicron the beginning of the end?
The last two weeks have brought so much uncertainty - again and at a time where we were hoping to celebrate, relax and enjoy the holiday season with family and friends. The only defence being boosters, rapid testing and PCR tests that take forever to turnaround. The injustices of the pandemic heightened yet again where all of us feel like we at risk of catching Omicron - I liken it to Walking on a Land Mine. This is the challenge and the signs of exhaustion and frustration are ever present. Nonetheless, we have had good news. Although cases of Omicron have increased significantly, the severity of the virus appears to have decreased for most.
As Healthcare organizations have been thrown into the next wave of the pandemic, the following are strategies that may help to manage exposure:
Encourage your staff to get boosted, encourage them to spread the importance of vaccines and promote opportunities for access
Continue to enforce appropriate infection and prevention protocols including but not limited to the use of personal protective equipment, distancing and limiting large gatherings
Encourage virtual care where possible
Provide support for well-being. Provide breaks and vacations when possible and provide access to employee assistance programs
Let's hope that whatever damage Omicron may cause in the immediate future, this is our way out and the beginning of the end.
